Everything you need to know about this story is in the first sentence of the source article that brought it to us:
A Florida man was arrested Sunday over reports that he allegedly shot at his coworker’s mom last month because of a sandwich order.
Well, as long as he had a good reason….
It all started with a well-meaning sandwich promotion inside a Walmart based Subway Sandwich shop. Now, we all know that the road to Hell is paved with good intentions, but it seems one young man was determined to just ruin the fun for everyone. The dude (who in no way abided) and a coworker were working at the Subway inside the Palm Springs Walmart where the promotion was being held. The promotion offered a free sandwich to Walmart store employees. The soon to be convict told police that “he became upset with his coworker when she made a wrap for a Walmart manager, then ignored him when he told her she needed to pay the difference since the promotion was for subs only.”
Apparently, they completed the shift without further incident, but this guy seems to have really let the issue stew. Stew as in simmer, not stew as in soup – as in soup and sandwich or soup and wrap, as the case might have been. Simmer may also be a wrong choice of words, as his simmering wasn’t making soup or stew or anything else that might be the result of simmering, rather his temper was the only thing simmering into a stew.
Now, where was I?
Oh yeah, his temper simmering into a stew. The next day our inmate in the making went to his coworker’s home and shoved her mother. I know what you are thinking. Next day mother-shoving always rockets to the top of the list when it comes to workplace conflict management. Someone in the home told the nefarious ne’er-do-well to leave, and that is when things got dicey. He took out a handgun and fired it at Mom’s feet, missing her by, well, we don’t really know. But he missed her, and that is the important part. You never should shove a mother, and you definitely never want to shoot the mother.
He ran away after firing the shot and was arrested two weeks later by an apparently lethargic Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. He has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The incident happened near an area know as Greenacres. There was no word if Arnold the Pig was involved (boomers should get that – millennials may be massively confused by the reference. Now try to get the song out of your head). He is currently being held at the Palm Beach County Jail on a $100,000 bond.
That is a lot of wraps; and under the free promotion an endless number of sandwiches.
For the employers and the workers’ compensation industry this represents an unusual occurrence of workplace violence. While no compensable injury resulted, it is generally a concern for a risk manager when an employee takes a workplace disagreement into someone’s home and fires a gun at their mother. There are rules against that, or there ought to be, anyway. On the positive side, this guy appears to be a real stickler for those rules. Someone should have pointed out that shooting at a coworker’s mother probably violates one of them.
And there is a big price to pay for a dispute over a free meal. And it ain’t just a sandwich baby. That’s a wrap.
